DEMO PLAY: Blue Wednesday

Also known as "Jo is a sucker for Blues and Jazz"

Whew!  Welcome to the first "Demo Play", a weekly review of a game's freely available demo.  This week, I'll be taking a look at "Blue Wednesday", from developer Buff Studios.

Firstly, this is a proper demo, it has enough of the game's features and story to make a player want more.  Unlike Poppy Playtime, which released a 15 minute free first chapter that was then used for NFT and merchandise marketing, this is a real demo.  The content portion is SIZEABLE, clocking in at nearly an hour.  I can barely express, as an oldie, how nice it was to play a demo in the magazine cover-disc style.  It's my job though, so I kind of have to.

You play as Morris, a young man months behind on his rent with no real zest for life.  He's relateable in his malais - a poorly paid service job, an angry neighbour and hopes and dreams he believes are dead.  Those hopes and dreams aren't truly dead, but they are on life support and it is your job, like some sort of music fairy, to help Morris achieve and succeed - even though it's not necessarily in the manner he would prefer.

Morris has one lifeline which has pretty much let him drown everytime - music.  Unemployed, poor and with the threat of homelessness lingering over his shoulder like a malignant spirit, he tries to play his way out of poverty.

Buff Studio LOVES Jazz and Blue's music.  If you're a music buff you will love the nods to trailblazers in the genre's.  The heart of the story matches with the original heart of Blue's and Jazz - dreams, fighting against poverty and isolation, looking up at the good live's of others and fighting to gain something like that for yourself.  Obviously, with music being a big deal I was worried about the dev's multiple apologies regarding sound quality.  For all their worry about this, it is amazing

Put on your headphones and enjoy some of the most chilled music you'll come across whilst enjoying a charming demo that made me really look forward to a full release.

Recently Buff Studio released a full chapter of the game for free, I hope you give it a play!
