She is ADORABLE!
Going to do something a little different with this - not all indie game devs make demo's. A demo often represents extra costs that they simply can't afford, whether that be in money or in time. It feels unfortunate that they, and we, could miss out on a potentially great game because of that. So let's take a quick look at the available information.
Bit of backstory and a caveat - Judero is a story that weaves together elements from a few different folk stories typical of the Scottish borders and a hefty dose of creative license. I am from that area, so I was intrigued.
A LOT of people get into making games through RPGMaker - it's a reasonable little engine that can make some pretty amazing stuff if you're willing to work on it. "LISA" and "Stitched" are both great and use the engine in very different ways.
"ENVELOPE" is a bit of a weird love-letter to PlayStation survival horror.
Wasn't sure what to expect when this demo was offered up to me by dev team Falling State, Indie devs through and through, and the concept seemed relatively mediocre. But, as I've said before, "there's nothing wrong with doing the same idea, so long as you put your own spin on it".
It's been quite a while since I played a visual novel, so when twitter followers voted for 'Strawberry Vinegar' I was quite pleased. This will be a pretty short Spotlight review, as this is quite a short game, as much as the copious amounts of writing drag the game time up.
Early Playstation graphics lend themselves so well to horror. They're typically a bit grimy looking, very blocky and reasonably easy to animate or change in-game. Games no longer need a huge engine to build them and players don't need a powerful gaming PC to get the best from them. On the negative side, you're not going to get huge emotional range or depth from the sprites alone, so all of the other elements have to be absolutely en-pointe.
You know, I really love horror games. It'd be great to play a good one for once.
This is a super glitchy beta demo. It's also surprisingly well-focused on getting the feel of the game across, which is cute, cartoony and a little creepy.
For once, I'm going to give the ending of the review at the beginning:
'The Medium' is very harsh. Not to play, it's a pretty standard control system with some great character acting and scenery.
